A Young Adult Book that introduces
readers to the story of Baucis and Philemon and the Latin Language
A Walk With Ovid
By Jennifer F. Knapp
Publisher: JFK Online Studios, LLC
Published: July 1, 2003
Pages: 30
ISBN: 0-9742249-0-1
This wonderfully illustrated and written books tells the story of Ovid, a
black pug, and his friend Lillian. They meet a boy who helps them and
realize the meaning of Baucis and Philemon, a Latin poem, still has
meaning today.
Ovid is name after Publius Ovidius Naso, who wrote poems in 43 B.C. to 18
A.D. which make up the The Metamorphoses. There are 15 books within The
Metamorphoses that tell 100 different myths, including "The Story of
Baucis and Philemon."
As old as these stories are, Ovid Pugnacious realizes during a walk with
Lillian that the lessons taught in this poem are still apparent, even in
today’s times. While on their daily walk, Lillian and Ovid get stuck in
the rain. A boy shelters them from the storm and offers the dog a biscuit,
showing them great compassion. Ovid wants to return the favor, but upon
returning to the boy’s home, they realize that his wish has already been
granted.
Although the story line is a great one, the book really teaches a lesson,
just like the Latin Poet used to do. There are Latin texts within the
book, that are translated within the appendix. I studied Latin in school
and rarely ever get to utilize this knowledge, but was very pleased with
the text and the translation. This is a wonderful story and book for any
child to read or parent to read to the child. I have shared this book with
my children and they now want an “Ovid” of their own.
This amazing book is available from the Publisher, JFK Online Studios, and
is also available from Amazon.com
